The criticism of the 1987 CDs was mostly towards the first four mono CDs and the fact that not all mono and stereo album mixes were available. It was consensus that the 1987 Pepper, Mystery, White, Abbey Road and Let It Be CDs were quite good. Andreas, Aug 7, 2017. #18.
The 2017 mixes are superior in every way to the original mono and stereo mixes. I know there’s people out there who still have the whole “mono > stereo” argument, which I can see based on the pisspoor “afterthought” of the mixes.but the 2017 are absolutely killer. It’s like hearing Pepper for the first time.

At any rate, the album wasn't necessarily designed (by the Beatles themselves) for Stereo, and definitely the White Album's mono mix is better.
